This is the time of year we begin to see big discounts on flowering bulbs like tulips and daffodils. And they’ll get even cheaper as the year goes on. But when is it too late to plant?
Optimum Vs Last Planting Dates
The optimum date for planting flowering bulbs is just before the first frost, according to many experts. But that is not the last date you can plant Here is some advice from the Old Farmers Almanac:
“Spring-flowering bulbs should be planted in the fall (a few weeks before first frost), while summer-flowering bulbs should be planted in the spring (a few weeks after last frost).”
So, most areas of the U.S. have missed the optimum time to plant, but according to most experts, you can still plant flowering bulbs – especially tulips – well after the first frost.
“If you are looking at unplanted bulbs in December or January or even February—get them in the ground. Flower bulbs are survivors by nature’s design. Every year stories abound of bulbs that bloom after being planted under the most improbable circumstances.” Read more at the Farmers Almanac.
