Turner Classic Movies has a tribute to master film composer Max Steiner with showings of King Kong, Gone With the Wind and three more of his classics on Monday, July 12, 2021.
Steiner, born in Vienna in 1888, worked in the theatre at age 12 then moved to Hollywood in 1929, where he worked for more than 30 years. He composed the score for about 300 films from the 1920s to 1960s.
He was nominated for an Academy Award for best film score 18 times and won three times. He received two nominations in 1940, for Dark Victory and Gone With the Wind.
Although Steiner did not win the Oscar for Gone With the Wind, the score is recognized as a masterpiece and is number 2 on AFI’s list of the best film scores ever. (Number 1 is Star Wars.)
