Bonfire of the Vanities is the subject of the new season of podcasts from Turner Classic Movies.
The Plot Thickens is the hit podcast from TCM that started in 2020 with 10 eipisodes of movie history from director Peter Bogdanovich. In addition to being a director, Bogdanovich is a noted author and film historian and brought to the podcast his interviews with Orson Wells, Alfred Hitchcock, Howard Hawks, John Wayne, John Stewart and other Hollywood legends. His series is titled, “I’m Still Peter Bogdanovich.”
Season Two of The Plot Thickens started on June 30, 2021 and is a dissection of what happened to create one of the biggest film disasters in Hollywood history. In 1990, Bonfire of the Vanities had a $47 million budget, a bestselling book as its source, and some of the biggest stars in Hollywood – Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, and Melanie Griffith – and an experienced director, Brian De Palma.
However, what should have been a sure-fire hit became a box office bomb, grossing just $15 million and getting reviews like “The movie never seems to know what it’s supposed to be. It wobbles.” (New York Times.)
TCM dissects the disaster with inside gossip and quotes from major players in its podcast, The Devil’s Candy. TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz and author Julie Salamon co-host the podcast.
