Director Guillermo Del Toro and Screenwriter Kim Morgan, whose new film, Nightmare Alley, premieres in theatres later this month, will be guest hosts as Turner Classic Movies shows the original film on Monday, December 6, 2021.
The original Nightmare Alley was released in 1947 and stars Tyrone Power, Joan Blondell and Coleen Gray. The film was a box office flop in 1947 but today is considered a film noir classic. It has a 100% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Film Critic Mick LaSalle called it “a one-of-a-kind experience — dark, bleak, twisted carnival noir.”
The movie follows the rise and fall of a con man in a story that begins and ends at a seedy traveling carnival. The carnival barker, Stan Carlisle (Power), is fascinated by everything he sees. Stanton works with “Mademoiselle Zeena” (Blondell) and her alcoholic husband, Pete (Ian Keith). Once a top-billed vaudeville act, Zeena and Pete use an ingenious code to make it appear that she has extraordinary mental powers. Read more at TCM.
The new version follows the same plotline and stars Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.
Del Toro (director of the new version) and Morgan (who wrote the new screenplay) will introduce the original film on TCM at 12 midnight ET on Monday, December 6, 2021. They will also guest host two other film noir classics before Nightmare Alley: Starting at 8:00 pm is Too Late for Tears (1949), and starting at 10:00 pm is Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950).
Below are trailers for the original 1947 Nightmare Alley and the 2021 remake. The remake will premiere in theatres on December 17, 2021.
