Thursday, January 20 is National Cheese Lover’s Day, an homage to the hundreds of cheeses – creamy, nutty, sharp, and oh so tasty – that we love to indulge in.
It’s no secret that the world loves its cheeses. And though Europe leads the world in cheese consumption, Americans are not far behind. In 2019, the average American put away more than 38 lbs. of cheese. In the past ten years, Americans have increased their cheese consumption by over five pounds, and overall consumption of cheese in the U.S. has more than doubled since the late 1970s.*
Our Favorites
For Americans, Cheddar and Mozzarella are the most popular cheeses. These cheeses also rank high for Europeans, with other regional varieties, such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Brie, and Gouda, in great demand.
In 2019, global cheese production amounted to about 21 million metric tons. The European Union remains the top producer of cheese in the world, but the U.S. accounts for about 30% of all production. Wisconsin — “America’s Dairyland” — continues to be the top cheese producing state in the U.S.
Break the (Cheese) Mold
With so many cheeses to choose from, National Cheese Lover’s Day is a great excuse to try something new. Not so knowledgeable about cheese? Learn about the major cheese categories here.
Then do an online search for “cheese shops near me” to locate stores and specialty shops in your area that can help you pick out some new cheeses to try. This is your chance to ask questions and have an expert (known as a cheese monger) suggest cheeses to suit your tastes. These shops will also cut cheese to order.
Most quality supermarkets and food stores also have cheese counters with a wide selection of cheeses. Whole Foods Market, for example, has a cheese department with certified mongers on hand to assist you. And don’t forget to check the cheese counter for cheeses on sale. This is a good way to expand your cheese horizons while staying within your budget.
So “say cheese” this week and enjoy!
