Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward are the subjects of a new documentary / dramatic series now on HBO Max.
The series – titled “The Last Movie Stars” – mixes film clips and real footage of the couple with new voiceovers by George Clooney as Newman and Laura Linney as Woodward. The series is a six-parter with all parts being available on July 21. It was produced by CNN Films and HBO Max and directed by actor Ethan Hawke. Martin Scorsese serves as executive producer.
“The Last Movie Stars is a six-part documentary from CNN Films and HBO Max that chronicles Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward’s iconic careers and decades-long partnership. Director Ethan Hawke brings life and color to this definitive history of their dedication to their art, philanthropy, and each other,” HBO Max said. You can start streaming on July 21 at: The Last Movie Stars on HBO Max.
Hawke said for source material he used transcriptions of tapes that Newman recorded and later destroyed. Clooney and Linney read from the transcripts and provide the voices for Newman and Woodward.
Newman died in 2008 at age 83. Woodward, born in 1930, lives in Westport, Connecticut, where she and Newman raised their daughters and is said to be in poor health.
Newman won one Academy Award, for “The Color of Money,” which you can see on Paramount+. Woodward also won a single Academy Award, for “The Three Faces of Eve,” which you can view by renting on Amazon Prime Video.
