Film star and TV icon Donna Reed would be 100 years old on Wednesday, January 27, 2021.
Donna Reed was born Donna Belle Mullenger on January 27, 1921 on a farm near Denison, Iowa, and died in 1986. The Iowa Historical Society plans a live celebration of her life on March 25, 2021, featuring Reed’s daughter, Mary Anne Owen. (Owen talks about her mother’s career in the video below.)
Reed’s career spanned more than 40 years, with performances in more than 40 films. In her movie career, she is best known for her role as Jimmy Stewart’s wife in It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) and as Montgomery Clift’s love interest in From Here to Eternity (1953), which garnered her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Reed is remembered by many older Americans for her starring role in The Donna Reed Show (1958–1966), where she portrayed Donna Stone, a middle-class American mother and housewife.
Reed died of pancreatic cancer in Beverly Hills, California, on January 14, 1986.
