Turner Classic Movies has a special showing of Blade Runner: The Final Cut on Friday, July 31, 2021.
The original Blade Runner, starring Harrison Ford and directed by Ridley Scott, was released in 1982 but has had several incarnations since its theatrical release. In all there are seven different versions, with The Final Cut being the latest (2007) and the one that had director Scott in complete artistic control. The Final Cut has been fully endorsed by Scott and Ford.
The Final Cut is a digitally remastered version that adds several cuts from the original, including the so-called unicorn dream and some violent scenes that were only in the non-U.S. version. Viewers will find a darker film without the original’s happy ending with Ford and co-star Sean Young. The narration that was added to the original film at the insistence of Hollywood is also not present in the Final Cut.
In all its versions, the film stars Ford as a “Blade Runner” who hunts down rogue replicants (manufactured humanoids) who are seeking to escape their nightmarish lives in off-world colonies. The film is set in a 2019 dystopian Los Angeles.
The film begins at 8 pm ET Friday, July 31, 2021.
