What To Look for in a New TV
- HD vs 4K TV: The least expensive TVs are High Definition (HD) with 720p or 1080p resolution. This means that, at larger sizes in particular, you won’t get as clear a picture as a 4K TV. However, if price is your biggest consideration, most viewers can live with HD. If you are buying a large TV – 50 inches or bigger – you should go for 4k.
- Smart TV or not: A Smart TV has built-in internet capability and streaming apps. However, you can add those features to a “dumb” TV by buying a Roku or similar streaming device for about $25.
- TV Size: You can get TVs ranging from 18 inches to more than 100 inches. What size you should buy usually depends on how far away from the TV you’ll be. The general recommendation is:
- Viewing distance (in inches)/2 = recommended TV size. For example, if you’re viewing distance is 10 feet, or 120 inches, then you should get a 60-inch TV.
- Brand: The best-known TV makers are Samsung and LG, but there are many new players that have ratings just as good. However, as a result of all the competition, Samsung and LG now have competitive prices. In general, you should look at the average customer rating when buying a TV. A name brand is worth paying extra, but maybe not much.
